properties for sale in Kent Margate is a seaside resort town lying 38miles northeast of Maidstone, along the chalk headland on the east coastline of Kent known as the North Foreland. The towns history is tied closely to the sea and it has a proud maritime tradition, including being added as a ‘limb’ of Dover in the ancient confederation of the Cinque Ports in the 15th century. Its name is thought to refer to a gap in the cliffs where pools of water gathered for swimmers - like its neighbour Ramsgate, it was traditionally a holiday destination for Londoners drawn to its sandy beaches and has been a leading seaside resort for 250 years. With a population of around 40,000, its wide range of facilities includes several cinemas, golf, fishing, watersports, fresh fish and seafood restaurants and pavement cafes. The Theatre Royal dates from 1787, there is a Contemporary Art Gallery named after Turner and the interesting parish church displays many fine brasses. There is an 18th century underground shell grotto reached by tunnels, a museum of local exhibits and previously a fine Victoria era pier, destroyed by a violent storm in 1978. The Old Town has an interesting cultural quarter and individualistic shops with great character. The railway station is a Grade II listed building from 1926 and operates trains to London via Chatham and to Ramsgate, Canterbury, Dover and Ashford International. Major roads out of Margate include the A28 to Canterbury, Ashford and the M20, the A299 to Whitstable and the M2, and the A254 to Broadstairs and Ramsgate. Kent International Airport is also nearby at Manston.
